The analysis for industry status, health impact and industrial policies relate to asbestos in China
In this paper, the data of occupational diseases reports of China have been analyzed and nearly all available papers published by academically Journal has been reviewed. The China had about 120 asbestos mining and bigger scale mining have about 30 enterprises. The some thousands enterprises make products containing asbestos. About 100 thousand workers exposed to asbestos hazards. 24 thousands and 4.6 thousand workers were employed in those asbestos mining and plants. The diagnosis for asbestosis started in China from 1950. Based on the nationwide statistics of occupational diseases, there are 7907 cumulative asbestosis patients by the end of 2003, and appeared the high peak of asbestosis between 1979～1985. The results of analysis for theses dates were revealed that asbestosis cases accounted for 1% in the total pneumoconiosis. About 923 asbestosis cases had dead, and the death rate was 11.67% for all the causes by report of occupational diseases. Death causes of the patients with asbestosis main were the complications of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease, tumor, and other diseases. Some epidemiological studies showed the prevalence of pleura plaque are about 51% in the patients with asbestosis and 15% in the exposure workers, respectively. In general, the work condition in asbestos mining is strongly worse than those of asbestos production plants. The asbestosis in asbestos mining was highest with incidence of 25.3%, and asbestosis in production plants was second with incidence of 13.6%. Lowest incidence was family spinning and weaving by hand, but with incidence of 8.5%, too. These studies also showed the incidence in total death, death of total cancer and lung cancer are 522.9, 195.7 and 72.2 per ten thousand in the workers exposed to asbestos, respectively. In addition, the rate of lung cancer in asbestosis was 19.1% and 8.7% in asbestos plants and mining, respectively.
