An Overview of the Revised Draft NIOSH Current Intelligence Bulletin-Asbestos Fibers and Other Elongated Mineral Particles: State of the Science and Roadmap for Research
Asbestos has been a highly visible issue in public health for over three decades. It is well documented that fibers from asbestos minerals, when inhaled, can cause serious diseases in exposed workers but current criteria (e.g., fiber dimension, analytical methods) used to assess occupational exposure may not be optimal for health protection. Also, despite considerable research, it remains controversial whether other biopersistent elongated mineral particles with thoracic-size dimensions represent a similar health concern.
