Heath Effects of Occupational Ezposure to Asbestos-- Studies of an Asbestos Factory in China
Asbestos is a well-recognized cause of both nonmalignant and malignant disease of lung parenchyma and pleura. Extensive studies have demonstrated the malicious endpoints associated with exposure to asbestos, such as asbestosis, pleural plaques, pleural thickening, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Yet, controversies have long existed in scientific community, including whether or not exposure to asbestos is associated with airway obstruction, and carcinogenic potency of chrysotile asbestos. The latter is an extremely important and concerned topic today. This article summarizes major results of epidemiological studies conducted in one of the largest asbestos factories in China, focusing on the controversial topics. The major objectives are to share scientific evidence for the adverse health effects of exposure to asbestos on workers, and provide a strong argument for intensifying prevention and control of asbestos-related diseases, and protecting workers health.
