Effect of smoking amount on asbestosis severity among asbestos workers
Objective To study the relationship between smoking amount and asbestosis severity (grading scheme of asbestosis), and to provide basis for preventive methods in reducing the synergy hazard between smoking and exposure to asbestos. Method 1814 workers were selected in a asbestos plant. The information included ordinary personal information, smoking history, occupational history, asbestosis history and work situation, and then the collected information was analyzed. Results 1. The smokers have higher asbestosis grade than that of the nonsmokers(P＜0.05);2. The smoking amount is positive related to the severity of the asbestosis (rs=0.156, P ＜0.01);3The smokers have a higher incidence than that of the nonsmokers (P ＜0.05).Conclusion The asbestosis incidence rises among the asbestos smoking workers, the smoking amount is positive related to the severity of the asbestosis. The health education for giving up smoking should be done in order to reduce the asbestosis incidence.
