Strategically Leveraging the Local and Global Orientations:Growth of Chinas Semiconductor SMEs
With the case studies on the growth of six semiconductor SMEs in China, we want to explore how the semiconductor SMEs in emerging countries strategically leveraging the local and global orientations to survive in the highly dynamic sectors. This paper establishes the analytical framework by examine from dimensions of both the technology strategy and market strategy. We found local or global market orientations of the semiconductor SMEs are not fixed under the turbulent environment. The global technology orientations may enable domestic semiconductor firms to exploit the mature technology catering to the existing domestic market while the domestic technology original can create some green-field opportunities and protective barriers for domestic semiconductor firms. The interplay between these two distinct but related drivers is also discussed.
