SMB International Competitiveness: Human Resource Development as a Key to Survival and Success

Human resource skill enhancement is recognized by most managers in SMBs doing business internationally as one key to company survival and success. A competent workforce possessing up-to-date international knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA) is essential to such aims, and necessary expertise is mainly achieved by requiring employees to attend appropriate training programs. Results from a voluntary sample of respondents to an American states professional associations program evaluations over a four year period are presented. They show that topics covered in regular programs, company support for employee attendance, attendee level of satisfaction with program content, effectiveness of program announcement dissemination, and topics identified by attendees as requiring new programs, are significant indicators of the value of human resource development to the success of SMBs operating in an increasingly competitive global environment.
