A Probabilistic Progressive Failure Model for Reliability of Composite Laminates
The ultimate strength failure probability of composite laminates is investigated. Composite structure is treated as a structure system, which consists of components. A probabilistic progressive failure model is proposed based on system reliability theory. In this model, the overall failure of the laminate is caused by a series of ply-level failure events, such as matrix cracking and fiber breakage, and the structure matrix is modified after each failure to simulate the laminate progressive failure process. The first-order reliability method (FORM) is employed to compute the failure probability of the ply-level events. The branch-and-bound technique is used to identify the significant failure sequences. The system failure probability is computed using reliability bounding techniques. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed model.
