Fabrication of CNT-dispersed CFRP using length-controlled CNTs : measurement of CNT length and characterization of mechanical properties

CNT length has great impact on the moldability (e.g. dispersion, viscosity) as well as physical performance of nanocomposites. For the improvement of quality of dispersion and moldability of CNT-dispersed epoxy, the CNTs and CNT-dispersed compounds are subject to milling process in spite of CNT length reduction which results in the loss of mechanical properties. Length distribution of CNTs in the compounds is measured using SEM and rheological properties of the compounds are discussed. Finally, CFRP using length-controlled CNT-dispersed epoxy is successfully fabricated and its mechanical properties are measured. Improvement of mechanical properties of CNT-dispersed CFRP is demonstrated by the comparison to CFRP without CNTs.
