Analysis on Settlement of Earth and Rock Filled Dams Based on Deep Overlays and Its Affection on the Safety of Dams
Earth and rock filled dam is usually the first choice on places with deep overlays be-cause of its better adaptation to the deformation of basement, its better usage of the local ex-cavating materials and its less investments compared with concrete dam. Usually, deep over-lay is apt to cause large settlements of dam based on it by reason of its easiness to be com-pressed when there are loads on it. We all know that large settlement may lead to cracks in dams and endanger the safety of dams. So the settlements observed from two dams based on deep overlays, one located in North Xinjiang and the other in Hainan, were analyzed to evaluate the influence of the overlays, disclose the affection to the safety of the dams, sum up some experiences and rules, offer some advices and points to be noticed and give consults to similar engineerings.
