Stability Analysis on the Abutment of Fa-tai Dam
Fa-tai Dam is an arch dam with the height 37.5 m. There is the defect on the left abutment from 2665~2677 m in high, and a gravity pier is built. Point and area safety are considered to analyse the gravity pier stability, with the load of water pressure and tempera-ture. High-angle cracks (fault) and low-angle cracks exist on the right abutment; the rock is divided into wedge blocks, which impacts the stability of right abutment. After combining fi-nite element method (FEM) and rigid body limit balanced method, the distribution curves of pressure and shear force along the right abutment from the bottom to top are draw up, and the result the integer and partial resistance to overturning is calculated out. It is indicated that the safety factor against sliding of left gravity abutment satisfies criteria. The integer safety factor against sliding of right abutment is 1.05, which is a little less than the criteria 1.10. There are 3 partial safety factors against sliding less than 1.10 while the right abut-ment is divided into 5 parts with equal hight; there are 2 partial safety factors against sliding less than 1.10, while it is divided into 3 parts by the cracks(or fault), so the right abutment safety factor against sliding does not satisfy criteria.
