Earth Dam Breaking: Mathematical Modeling and Application

Based on the four-stage earth dam breaking mechanism investigated, a mathematical model has been developed for the breach erosion simulation in earth dams. The model simu-lates the growth of a relatively small initial breach in the top of the earth dam and the devel-opment of the flow rate through the breach. Reservoir water balance, breach hydraulics,dam body erosion and breach development have been combined. The model has been calibra-ted with the data of four laboratory tests and tested to the data of other two laboratory tests,yielding fairly good agreement. Finally, application of the model to the emergent drainage of the quake formed Tangjiashan Dammed Lake in China gives results in good agreement with the observed maximum drainage flow rate and its occurring time.
