Ecological Effects of Dam Removal: a Preliminary Study

Wholescale disrepair and aging of Chinese dam infrastructure may make dam decom-missioning and removal to be an important measure in dam safety management. Its essential to study ecological consequences of dam removal. The sediment erosion, transport, and dep-osition are likely to be the most important physical effects of dam removal. And sediment re-gime changes and channel morphology responses following dam removal result in ecological changes. This paper reviewed ecological effects of dam removal, and developed a strategy for ecological effects research of dam removal. Emphasizing the importance of sediment dynam-ic, the strategy suggested using sediment transport models to quantify sediment dynamic and related channel form adjustments, and analyzing ecological effects of dam removal based on modeling results. According to this research strategy, this paper at last developed a prelimi-nary research method to assess flow stage changes associated with downstream channel ag-gradation following Shaheji Dam removal.
