General Design of Safety Monitoring Automation System for Xiaowan HPS

Xiaowan Hydropower Station is the leading reservoir in the middle and lower rea-ches of Lancang River. This project consists of concrete hyperbolic arch dam with the maxi-mum height of 292 m, spillway on the left bank and underground diversion generating system on the right bank. The reservoir can hold 14. 914 billion cubic meters of water and the in-stalled capacity of the Power station is 4 200 MW(6×700 MW). The safety monitoring auto-mation system project of Xiaowan is by far the largest one in the world which implemented during construction period. The system is divided into six sub-systems, with various types of measurement points 6 391. This article discussed the general design ideas of dam safety moni-toring automation system for Xiaowan Hydropower Station, including sub-system settings,network design, communications design, lightning protection design, system function de-sign, data flow, the implementation by stages plan during the construction period, which is a valuable reference for design and implementation for dam safety monitoring automation sys-tem of large-scale dam in future.
