Dam Failure Risks Resulted from Strong Earthquakes in Valley Areas and Their Prevention
In this article, comparison has been made to the failure risks of man-built dams and quake dams with practical examples with respect to the worries in different circles of the soci-ety on building dams following the severe earthquake in Wenchuan, and countermeasures have been proposed to prevent and avoid dam failure risks resulted from earthquakes. It is believed that in valley areas, quake dams are highly likely to form by a strong earthquake, and also likely to fail afterwards, and a man-built dam may also result in a disaster in an earthquake. However, when countermeasures as described in this article are taken to prevent the disasters, the dam failure risk can still be controlled within the permissible limit, to meet the re-quirements of production safety and environmental protection.
