DAILY FLOW ESTIMATION AT UNGAUGED REGIONS BASED ON REGIONAL FLOW DURATION CURVES

For the ungauged regions where many water resources projects are located, the daily flow hydrographs are normally required but unavailable. Hence, the regional flow duration curve must be generated using their relations to the underlying surface characteristics of watershed. In traditional procedures of rainfall-runoff model calibration, a fit of the observed flow hydrographs normally is selected as the objective function for the model parameter optimization. In this paper, the fit of the flow duration curve is replaced as the new objective function of model calibration. The feasibility and simulation efficiency of the proposed method are analyzed. The regional flow duration curves are developed on eleven catchments, with the fit of the flow duration curve utilized as a new objective function of the Xinanjiang model parameter calibration, and the simulation efficiency is very high. The calculation results on the two verification catchments have shown that the method is feasible. Because of its high simulation efficiency, the proposed method may be applied in daily flow hydrograph estimation at ungauged regions.
