STRUCTURE & FUNCTION BASED APPROACHES TO RECONSTRUCTING URBAN RIVER SYSTEM IN RIVER NETWORK AREA OF CHINA

Because of the importance of appropriate urban river system layout, its reconstruction of an appropriate layout becomes a basic task for local authority at present in China. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for reconstruction of urban river system layout, which can be applied at different scale levels. After reviewing ecosystem services, functions and structural characterization of urban fiver system, the approaching procedure is as follows: (1), Calculation of indexes of γ and α. Methods of calculating indexes γ and α are given, which reflect the connectivity of river system network, and the rationality of reconstructed project can be evaluated by comparing the values of indexes γ and α of urban current and reconstructed river system; (2), Compatible analysis and ranking of functions. Compatible analysis are illustrated by collaborating the functions of each river to avoiding mutual exclusive functions as well as ranking of river system services according to their importance; and (3), Archetype experiment of water diversion. Method of archetype experiment of water diversion is given, which can help to explore the unsuitability of current fiver system and acquire suitable dimensions for each river. River system layout of Pukou city is reconstructed by applying above approaching procedure, and results show that the proposed layout has been improved apparently.
