STUDY ON TURBIDITY DURING FLOOD IN MYOGINOHANA AREA OF LAKE KASUMIGAURA

This paper describes an environmental investigation of turbidity increase in the Myogihona area of Lake Kasumigaura in Japan. The construction of the water channel Tone Dousuiroconnected between the lake and the Tone River was completed in order to make more water resources available in the nearby urban zone. However, there is negative concern that the careless gate operation of the channel will cause a disturbance of the bed mud with the turbidity increase by the sudden water discharge, and that this increase will play a bad role in the water environment. Thus, we tried to investigate qualitatively the time-series of the water flow patterns, the geological characteristics and the turbidity increase in this area by the field observations, so as to comprehend the relation between the flow condition and turbidity increase. The overall results of the field observations and the geological surveying accompanied with the previous study devoted for the hydraulic investigations of the local bed mud in this area showed us that the turbidity increase is mainly generated not by the mud erosion,but by the high concentration of turbidity in the inflow water during the floods. In addition, we carried out the preliminary flow simulation in the case of the normal operation with the planed discharge through the channel. As a result, it is found that the very little bed mud will be possibly raised up in the flows by the normal operation.
