ENTRAINMENT AND SHEAR INSTABILITY OF STRATIFIED FLOW IN CURVED FLUME WITH 90° BEND

The entrainment intensity and shear instability of thermally stratified shear flows in curved open flume with 90° bend have been investigated experimentally. The distribution of velocity, temperature, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stress has been systemically measured, and the entrainment intensity and shear instability of the stratified flow in the curved open flume have been analyzed. The results indicated that the entrainment intensity of the stratified flow attenuates gradually along the current, and approaches to zero in the cross section at 3.5 times of the flow depth distance out from the bend exit, that implies the process of vertical entrainment of the stratified flow has been over on the whole; entrainment intensity increases exponentially to initial densimetric Froude number Fd0 nearby the junction region of the heated and cold flow. At the same time, the stability criterion of the stratified flow in the curved flume with 90° bend has been put forward as the function of Fdo.
