A BED FORM BASED RESISTANCE FUNCTION FOR ALLUVIAL CHANNELS FROM EXPERIMENTAL DATA

The present study has the objective of developing a general functional relationship for the variation of the hydraulic resistance of alluvial channels by introducing a resistance parameter herein identified as B. This parameter depends on the type and characteristics of the bed form present as well as on the grain size distribution of the mixture of the sediments in the bed. The nature of the function defmed from dimensional analysis and multiple linear regression on the dependent parameters, needs to be established for each of the bed forms and sediment mixtures individually.Utilizing the data collected by various researchers in laboratory canals, the functional relationships for the resistance factor B has been established utilizing three or two dimensionless parameters as independent variables. The results show that excellent functional relationships exist for dunes individually. The influence of the grain size distribution became evident when it was attempted to obtain a unified relationship for dunes by pooling the diverse data. The great advantage of the resistance function proposed here is that it eliminates the need to separate the total resistance into two components.
