TECHNIQUES OF WATER DIVERSION AND SEDIMENT PREVENTION IN ESTUARY REGIONS

In the course of water environment improvements of Zhenjiang City, the kinetic characteristics of the tidal flow were fully utilized. New techniques of water diversion and sediment prevention were studied and a two-part sluice gate was designed. During the time of rising tide, water with a lower sediment concentration can pass through the sluice gate and enter the Neijiang River.Otherwise, during the time of falling tide, water with a high sediment concentration can pass through the gate, bringing sediment out of the Neijiang River. A series of experiments proved that the water diversion and sediment prevention with the specific sluice gate can remarkably reduce the sediment accumulation and can be popularized in city diversion works.
