INFLUENCE OF ESTUARINE BREAKWATER CONSTRUCTIONS ON KERALA COAST IN INDIA
All the man-made improvement works at the coastal inlets generally influence the shore stability for some distance on the adjacent coasts from the inlets. To develop fishery harbours and minor ports at the estuaries of Kerala coast, it is essential to construct breakwaters due to the existing unfavourable stability conditions. At seven coastal inlets in Kerala, the breakwaters are already constructed/being constructed for the development of fishery harbours and minor ports. In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyze the impact of the breakwater construction at seven estuaries on the adjoining coasts. The collected data on shoreline changes and hydrographic survey data available for the inlets were analyzed to infer the impact of breakwater constructions on the coastal geomorphology. The results of detailed analyses are presented.
