LONGSHORE SEDIMENT TRANSPORT AND BREAKWATER LAYOUT OPTIMIZATION

Breakwater layout directly affect the magnitude and distribution of sedimentation at coastal harbors and other infrastructures. Though previous studies explored the mechanism of rapid sedimentations with various mitigation engineering measures proposed there has been no widely-accepted principle guiding the optimum design of breakwater layout. A physical model test recently conducted for the Liaoning nuclear power plant shows that the originally-designed breakwater layout could not effectively impound longshore sand transport, especially, during temperate cyclones significant amount of sand would be deposited by wave-driven longshore currents in front to and within the entrances of water-intake forbay. After optimizing the breakwater layout, it is observed that the longshore sand transport could be effectively impounded with much less amount of sand deposited in front to and within the entrances of the forbay.
