FLOW ANALYSIS AROUND A SUBMERGED GROYNE

Groyne is a structure protruding into a channel from the bank to protect the channel bank by reducing flow velocity along the bank and control flow direction for navigation. Recently, one more function (environmental function) was added. It can be used as aquatic habitat and shelter during the flood by making the recirculation zone along the bank in downstream of groyne. However, groyne may produce some side effects that have a risk of overflow with water level rising caused by disturbing the channel flow. Therefore, the study on characteristics of flow upper and down stream near the groyne is necessary. It is difficult to explain the flow near groyne because complicate vortex flow appear in downstream of groyne but also it has a various feature as a various scale and shape of groyne such as permeable and impermeable, submerged and non-submerged, sloping crests groyne. The present study aims to analyze flow patterns for a various type of groynes with experimental and numerical tests. A 3D numerical model was calibrated and verified through comparison hydraulic experiments. The results from numerical test for flow ofgroyne fields were analyzed. From the results, numerical model represented recirculation flow, back water flow along the bank and moving dead zone to downstream similar with experiments. Recirculation zone has appeared in layer near bed also and varied as z is increased (z=0 on bed) in downstream flow in groyne.
