NUMERICAL MODELING OF FLOW CONDITION IN A BOTTOM OUTLET

Studies on a large bottom outlet were conducted in Water Research Institute, Tehran. Objectives of these studies were to measure the rating curve of the tunnel gate, flow air demand and to study the flow condition upstream and downstream of the gate. It was decided to conduct these studies both physically and numerically. For this purpose a 1:17 scale model was constructed from the bottom outlet. FLUENT computer code was also considered for the numerical model studies. The bottom outlet was modeled from 70m upstream of the gates to 110m at its downstream. In the numerical simulation the VOF scheme was used together with k-ε turbulence model. The flow discharge and air supply from the air vent downstream of the gate was then computed by both 2D and 3D numerical models for different gate openings and upstream head. In addition the pressure distribution at the gate location was calculated and compared with measurements. Comparison of results showed a good agreement. This study showed the ability of the numerical model to simulate the complex air water flow in high speed gated tunnels.
