CHINESE STURGEON SPAWNING HABITAT HORIZONTAL MEAN VORTICITY COMPUTATION AND ANALYSIS

The Chinese sturgeon, Acipenser sinensis, is an anadromous protected species. Since the construction of the Gezhouba Dam, its migration pattern has been blocked, and the length of natural spawning site has reduced to less than 7 km. The fish found an alternative spawning ground located in a narrow reach downstream close to the Gezhouba Dam site. In this article, we applied Deift3D-Flow model to simulate Chinese sturgeon habitat in Gezhouba downstream to obtain the flow field state, and we used measured data to validate the model. Results indicate that the accuracy of this model is good Based on the above simulation, horizontal mean vorticity was chosen as one of the characteristic values to assess the hydraulic environment of Chinese sturgeon habitat. We improved the computing method of the horizontal mean vorticity by computing the absolute value of the original vorticity. The vorticity was calculated from the simulative output and the distribution was described. The horizontal mean vorticities are 0.45~3.8×10-3s-1of research region and 1.5~ 2.0×10-3s-1 at the adult Chinese sturgeon mass fields. Vorticity strength selection of Chinese sturgeon helps to survive under changing national environment. The output of the paper can provide reference for hydraulic environment protection of habitat in the ecological regulation of Three Gorges Reservoir.
