Realising the Benefits of Improvements in High Temperature Metrology

The precise measurement of high temperature has always been important for a broad spectrum of industries, to ensure optimum energy use, process control and product quality. However, such measurements are problematic due to the unique challenges posed by the measurement conditions. Recent converging developments in high temperature fixed-points, primary absolute radiometry and improved high temperature thermocouples are in the process of effecting a step change improvement in this key measurement, all the way from the scale realisation and dissemination at the national measurement institute to the more prosaic, but no less important measurements in industry. This paper will give an overview of the improvements in high temperature metrology to be expected in the next three to five years.
