New Trends and Challenges in the Use of Internet in Asian Distance Education
Advances in the use of new technology have stimulated the use of intemet in Asian distance education. This paper addresses new trends, challenges, issues, and effort in the use of intemet in Asian distance education. Distance education in Asia has prospered with growth and increased uses of new technology. However, there remain issues to address relating to quality, accessibility, equity and participation, use of new technology, access to knowledge through the use of intemet. Discussion about recent development of distance education in Asia is put in the contexts of historical backgrounds, current conditions, recent changes, and new roles of open universities. Growth in Asian distance education is in response to the demand of the stakeholders and has been stimulated by opportunities in the use of new technology. Asian open universities are expected to play enhanced roles in meeting the needs of the stakeholders.
