An Action Research Approach to Improve Practice of Distance Education
The Faculty of Education of the Open University of Sfi Lanka offers a PGDE Programme through distance mode with the purpose of improving professional competencies of in-service teachers. This is the oldest and the largest programme of the Faculty which is in high demand due to large number of un-trained teachers recruited to the school system. The issues related to the programme that needed to be addressed were two fold. In one side, there is a need to introduce changes to this programme in line with the curriculum revisions, developments in the instructional processes and assessment processes in the school system and also to cater to the demands arising from the society to improve the professional practice of teachers. On the other side, the professional skills of the Faculty staff, both internal and visiting, should be improved in line with the changes made in the above programme. Therefore, the Faculty has adopted the Action Researchapproach which offers a framework to handle both issues simultaneously.
