High strength steels and cast steel nodes for tubular structures-investigations,applications and research results

The use of (very) high strength steels has been restricted due to lack of appropriate design standards,in spite of modern steels possessing sufficient toughness and weldability. Structural steels of up to 1100 N/mm2 yield stress can be produced and the technical potential is not yet fully exhausted. Cast steel nodes have been found to be particularly attractive in Germany and Switzerland, as demonstrated by a number of recently erected imposing roof structures and bridges. The fatigue design of some of the nodes was supported by extensive tests at Karlsruhe University for the German Railways (Deutsche Bahn AG) in the early 1990s.Research is now directed towards guidelines for acceptable standards. This paper will present some results obtained from a number of recent research projects at Karlsruhe University.
