Design of steel towers for Skylink Tramway
An aerial tramway has been designed to cross the Delaware River, linking the states of Pennsylvania (PA) and New Jersey (NJ). It consists of a suspended gondola system supported by one steel tower and one concrete anchorage on each side of the river. The steel towers will be about 93 meter high and are made of circular pipe sections with diameters varying from 2.1 m to 3.7 m. A few major challenges were overcome during the design, such as: improving the fatigue resistance of tubular connections; studying the vortex shed-ding behavior of the circular tower legs; fabricating the tower legs; and developing erection procedure.
