Analysis and design of hollow steel section folded plate the hall of Petroleum Science and Technology Museum

This paper presents a design case on the structure of the hall of Petroleum Science and Technology Museum in Daqing, a lightweight and transparent enclosure structure which shows a shape of diamond. The project features a combination of tubular structure and folded plate structural system, which represents a classical yet pleasing steel structure. This innovative structure utilizes 10 v-shaped folded plates that cover a large volume public space and 4 v-shaped folded plates that support the facade glass curtains and a part of weight of the roof. The other part of roof weight is supported by the exhibition buildings which are behind the hall. In the view of mechanical character, the roof structure functions as a spatial shell. In order to release the shell thrust on the supporting structure, single-direction sliding bearing and tension ring beam have been used to form a self-balance system. This paper introduces the components of structural system and the static performance. The linear and nonlinear buckling analysis is conducted to study the structural stability. The result demonstrates that this structure is good in mechanical properties.
