Ezamination of yield stress limitation for concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column using SM570TMC steel

Concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) has been used throughout the world in structures of varying heights and structural configuration. AISC-LRFD(2001) indicated that the specified minimum yield stress of structural steel and reinforcing bars used in calculating the strength of a composite column shall not exceed 415 MPa and AISC(2005) allowed a broad range to 525 MPa. The purpose of this paper is to examine the yield stress limitation in view of the performance characteristics of composite tubular columns using SM570 steel made by POSCO in Korea. 4 steel columns and 12 short and long composite columns using SM490TMC(Fy=325 MPa) and SM570TMC structural steel (Fy= 440MPa) were tested and evaluated. Suitability of AISC(2005)and Korean Building Code(2005) design specification and the potential benefits for composite columns were investigated through the observation of the behaviors of these columns with various types.
