Fatigue modeling for partially overlapped CHS K-joints with surface crack
During practical assessment of residual life of tubular joints, the Stress Concentration Factor(SCF) and the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) are the two most important parameters and their estimated values are often obtained by numerical (finite element) modeling. However, to generate a proper mesh and model forcomplicated joint configurations like the partially overlapped circular hollow section (CHS) K-joints is not atrivial task. In this paper, a new automatic mesh generation procedure for the discretization and modeling of partially overlapped CHS K-joints is presented. In the suggested modeling and mesh generation procedures, a surface crack of any length can be created at any position along the joint intersection. With the development of the purposed mesh generator, the estimation of the SCF for an uncracked joint and the estimation of the SIF and residual fatigue life for a cracked joint could be carried out quickly and conveniently. The presented numerical results showed that the proposed method is both efficient and reliable.
