Advanced numerical modelling of fatigue size effects in welded CHS K-joints

The fatigue design of tubular space trusses for bridge applications requires additional knowledge with respect to their fatigue resistance. As an introduction, the paper reviews the fatigue assessment of tubular joints and exposes basic concepts on the size effects. In order to carry out a thorough study on the geomet-rical size effects in CHS K-joints, an advanced 3D crack propagation model was implemented using the Dual Boundary Elements Method (DBEM). The incremental crack propagation process allows for the calculation of the Stress Intensity Factors (SIF) along the doubly curved crack front at different crack depths. The fatigue life for three main basic load cases is then calculated using the Paris law. The model was validated against several fatigue tests on bridge-like tubular trusses conducted at ICOM/EPFL.
