Parametric finite element study of branch plate-to-circular hollow section X-connections

A parametric finite element study has been undertaken on plate-to-circular hollow section X-connections, with either longitudinal or transverse branch plates and with the branches loaded in either tension or compression. The finite element models employed were validated by comparison with the behaviour of seven plate-to-CHS connections previously tested. The 210 numerical tests generated illustrated that current limit states design recommendations for such connections are conservative, and especially so for tension-loaded branch plates. Distinct resistance equations are proposed for the latter, which will ultimately enable the capacityof through plate-to-CHS connections to be quantified.
