Load-carrying capacity study on T- and K-shaped inner-stiffened CHS-RHS joints

It is well known that stiffened joints have higher ultimate strength. Inner-stiffened joints were recently applied to some important projects in Shanghai. The main model of these joints in this paper is made up of CHS brace and RHS chord which comes from actual projects. The failure mode of unstiffened and inner-stiffened joints here is flexural failure of the chord face by controlling joint parameters. Through system-atic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on load-carrying capacity of simple T-shaped inner-stiffened joints underaxial load, in-plane and out-of-plane bending in the brace, a set of formulae used to structural design were presented. Based on the study of T-joints, ultimate strength formulae of K-shaped inner-stiffened joints wereobtained. At last the applications of inner-stiffened joints in two projects are introduced. Despite complexity of the inner-stiffened joints in actual projects, quantitative results were acquired in this paper contributed to the basic research of inner-stiffened joints.
