Shear capacity of hollow flange channel beams in simple connections
A new hollow flange channel section has recently been manufactured in Australia. This paper summarises the results of a series of tests on simple shear connections of these beams to a column via the webside plate connection. A new failure mode was observed, relating to the opposing shear flows in the two hollow flange portions. A simple design model incorporating a plastic mechanism in the web was devel-oped. Reliability analyses were performed and indicated that the design model had an acceptable degree ofreliability.
