Failure assessment of cracked Circular Hollow Section (CHS)welded joints using BS7910:2005

The prediction of the residual strength of offshore tubular joints is based on the design equa-tions of uncracked joints. However, many offshore structures installed in the open seas are found to contain cracks caused by severe cyclic loads. These fatigue cracks propagate and increase in size resulting in the reduc-tion of the joint capacity. Therefore, there is a need to develop a systematic procedure for assessing the fracturestrength of such cracked tubular joints in practice. The most widely used and accepted approach is the failure assessment diagram (FAD) method. Based on this approach, BS7910 (2005) gives guidance for assessing the acceptability of defects in welded structures. In this codes of practice, a specific assessment procedure for tubular joints in offshore structures has been proposed recently. In accordance with this procedure, a full-scale fatigue cracked tubular K-joint specimen, subjected under axial and in-plane loads, is analyzed and assessed illustrating the usage of this approach.
