Effect of chord length ratio of tubular joints on stress concentration at welded region
The stress distribution around the weld toe is critical in assessing the fatigue life of a tubular joint. Although there are many reported parametric equations in the literature for estimating the Stress Concen-tration Factor (SCF) of a tubular joint under basic load, the effect of the chord length ratio on the SCF values is generally neglected. This paper presents the Finite Element (FE) analysis of the effect of the chord length ratio on the SCF values of tubular T-joints under axial load. From the FE investigation, it is found that the chord length ratio has a remarkable influence on the SCF values at the weld toe when the geometry of a tubular T-joint is slightly outside the validity range specified in CIDECT. Therefore, the chord length ratio should be consid-ered in calculating the hot spot stress and its distribution in practical design stage.
