Test and analysis on double-skin concrete filled tubular columns

Concrete filled tubular columns are widely used in China for the attractions of higher strength and ductility. Under some conditions in bridges and high rise buildings, tubular columns with double skin have additional advantages of time saving, lower self-weight and arrangement of vertical equipment pipes. In this paper, a total of 32 Double Skinned Concrete Filled Tubular (DSCFT) columns are tested with different geometrical arrangements. The varied parameters of the specimens are diameter to thickness ratios, diameter of inner tubes and cross-section geometric shapes (square or circular). The test results on stress/strain of steel and compressive strength of the columns are described and discussed. The equation on axial loading capacity is suggested and compared with some design codes. This equation is proved to be workable for calculation of axial strength of all kinds of columns tested in this study.
