Development of an effective shearhead system to eliminate punching shear failure between fiat slabs and tubular columns
This paper reports on the results of a test on a new shearhead system for tubular steel columns and concrete flat slabs. The shearhead eliminates punching shear failure between the fiat slab and column while allowing use of thinner slabs. Furthermore the design allows service holes adjacent to the column to be made easier. To develop a practical system, the shearhead should not only possess sufficient punching shear resist-ance to eliminate punching shear failure, but should also be efficient for construction. This paper will present the results of a test and an assessment of three main design codes: Eurocode 2, British Standard BS 8110 and American Concrete Institute code ACI 318. The results of this assessment suggest that that British Standard BS 8110 provides the best prediction. Although the ACI 318 code is the only one that explicitly deals with shear-heads, the ACI 318 prediction of the failure perimeter seems to be much lower than the test result. The reported test confirms that shearheads can be used with tubular columns.
