High strength concrete-filled tubular steel columns in fire
Concrete-filling of hollow structural section steel columns is an effective means to increase the fire resistance significantly. In recent years, high strength concrete has often been favoured over normal strength concrete to achieve increased load-bearing capacity of the composite column. Nevertheless, high strength concrete has performance problems when exposed to fire due to faster degradation of properties. This paper addresses some important questions relating to constitutive laws of high strength concrete as well as its reasonable use. Investigations are based on both North American and European high temperature material properties. Effect of different types of concrete fillings on the fire resistance of the column was considered. Investigations included both plain and reinforced concrete-filling (bar or steel fiber reinforced). Moreover, design recommendations regarding its use are given.
