Ezperimental study on SCFs of welded CHS-to-concrete filled CHS T-joints under azial loading and in-plane bending

The present paper deals with an experimental investigation of the hot spot stress distributions and Stress Concentration Factors (SCFs) of welded T-joints composed of Circular Hollow Section (CHS) braces and Concrete Filled Circular Hollow Section (CFCHS) chords under tensile and compressive axial Ioadings and in-plane bending on the braces respectively, which is foundation for fatigue assessment of the joints. Static tests were performed on ten test specimens with different non-dimensional geometric param-eters and concrete grades. The test results have been statistically interpreted, and indicate that the CHS-to-CFCHS T-joints exhibited evident improvement in rigidity and reduction in SCFs around the joints under the three loading conditions when compared with joints made of CHS. The difference in hot spot stresses between linear and quadratic extrapolation was slight for CFCHS chords and obvious for CHS braces. In addition, the CHS-to-CFCHS joints were found to have higher SCFs on chords under axial tension than under axial compression and SCFs at tension-side chord crowns were a little higher than those at compression-side chord crowns under in-plane bending.
