Welding recommendations for modem tubular steels
Good weldability is the necessary precondition for the use of modern tubular steels in structural components. Increasing requirements in terms of higher strength and toughness properties signify challenging tasks for fabricators. In particular small and medium-sized companies that are not so experienced in handling these grades require support from the tube supplier in the form of welding recommendations. In-house process development is, in the majority of cases, not economically feasible and this lack of knowledge could lead in the worst case to a misapplication or wrong handling of these steel tubes. In order to meet customers needs and avoid incorrect welding of these materials, Vallouree & Mannesmarm Tubes has, in cooperation with the Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung in Duisburg, Germany, evaluated an R&D program for supply of welding recommendations, custom-tailored to their modem steels in terms of chemical composition, wall thickness, heat treatment state and the appropriate welding processes. This presentation examines the technical and commercial implementation of this project and the success of thestrategy for provision of welding recommendations to customers.
