Ezperimental research and design for regular and irregular cast steel joints in tubular structures

The geometrical configuration of cast steel joints can be basically classified as regular and irregular ones. The former is manufactured in batch, the behavior of which can be studied systematically and designed following theoretical or empirical formula. The latter, however, has to be analyzed numerically or tested individually in most cases. In this paper, design methodology for both geometrical regular and irregular cast steel joints is studied. The behavior and design rules for two types of regular X-shaped east steel joints,one with solid joint zone and the other with a feature of four-way joint zone, are studied and reported. General design criteria and important issues for irregular cast steel joints are also discussed. It is indicated that numer-ical analysis and physical test supplement each other due to their own advantages, especially to the complicated irregular joints.
