Non-linear analysis of ultimate loading capacity of cast tubular Y-joints under azial loading
In this paper, a number of parametric analyses on the ultimate load capacity of cast Y-joints are performed. The geometry model is established using the CAD software Solidworks. Non-linear analysis is carried out using the commercial finite element program ANSYS. Parametric equations of the ultimate loading capacity derived from the results of the finite element analysis are presented for the normal range of basic shapes of Y-joints under axial loading. The ultimate loading capacity sensitivity of the cast tubular joints to variations in the geometric parameters has been assessed. As well as the parameters which governing the stress in welded joints, an additional parameter ρ defined by Edwards (1985) has been introduced to characterize the size of the fillet. Results and interpretation of the sensitivity of ultimate loading capacity of cast tubular joints to the param-eter ρ are presented, and it provides references for the construction design and the revision of Chinese code.
