Study on columns with rounded triangular section in Henan TV tower

Structural members with Circular Hollow Section (CHS) are commonly used in high steel TV towers due to their low wind pressure coefficient and high overall buckling capacity under axial compressive loads. However, the outer columns of the 388 m high Henan TV tower, currently a landmark in Chinas Henan province, adopted the Rounded Triangular Sections (RTS) in order to show a unique architectural appearance of the tower. This makes it very difficult for structural designers to determine the structural form and load-carrying capacity of the columns as well as the connection method. Considering the size of the structural members, feasi-bility of the connections, construction difficulty, construction time, and project cost, designers decided to use the RTS columns with specially designed flange-plates extruded in both sides of the column wall. A series of experimental studies on the scaled structural models and finite element analyses were carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior of the RTS columns and the associated flange connections.
