Ezperimental research on beams with tubular chords and corrugated steel webs

Experiments on beams with tubular chords and corrugated steel webs were carried out. The differences among the three specimens lie in the chords of hollow steel tube or Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST). In specimen A, all chords are hollow steel tubes; in specimen C, all chords are CFST; while in specimen B, the upper chords are CFST but the lower chords are hollow steel tubes. Stresses, displacements, failure modes and ultimate load carrying capacity of the beams are analyzed and compared with each other. Experimental results show that the flexural rigidity and ultimate carrying capacity is improved considerably if the chords are CFST compare to hollow steel tubes. Joint failure in tubular trusses can be avoided in such a beam with tubular chords and corrugated webs. Based on the Quasi-Plane-Section assumption, the formula to calculate the ultimate load of this new composite structure is presented and the predicted results agree well with the test results.
