Numerical investigations on the static behaviour of CHS X-joints made of high strength steels
The use of high strength steels with yield strengths up to fy=690 N/mm2 (S690) for weldedhollow section joints is hampered due to the lack of adequate provisions in design standards. The design recom-mendations of EN 1993-1-8 (2005) are based on experimental and numerical investigations using steel grades S235 or S355 and the detailed investigations are under way to verify how these recommendations affect higher strength steels. Based upon the few detailed experimental investigations available dealing with the load carrying behaviour of connections made of high strength steels (Noordhoek et al. 1998), EN1993-1-8 (2005) gives a reduction factor of α= 0.9 to the design formulae for connections made of steels with yield strengths 355 <fy ≤ 460 N/mm2. In EN1993-1-12 (2007), this reduction factor is further reduced to α= 0.8 for steels with yield strengths 460 <fy≤ 690 N/mm2. Both factors are independent of the geometry of the joints. This paper reports observations from the first numerical investigations.
