Fire resistance design of ezternally protected concrete filled tubular columns
This paper presents the development of a method to evaluate fire resistance of externally protected Concrete Filled Tubular (CFT) columns. A design program for CFT columns, based on the composite design method in EN 1994-1-1 but modified to take into account mechanical property changes of steel and concrete at elevated temperatures, has recently been developed to calculate fire resistance of CFT column at elevated temperatures. This paper will first present a summary of this method and validation of the design software, by comparison of prediction results against a large number of fire tests previously carried out by others. The main part of this study will assess the current Corus Tubes design method for CFT columns with external fire protection and propose modifications where appropriate. Finally, this paper presents a comparison of fire resistance between CFT columns and reinforced concrete eolumns to demonstrate a few anomalies that designers should be aware.
